KATHAK TRAINING
Oorja Danceworks offers a progressive Kathak training program in GTA, designed to support dancers at every stage of their journey. Classes are offered in JAIPUR GHARANA by Devanshi Mishra.
Whether you are learning Kathak for the first time or refining your artistry after years of practice, Oorja’s program offers a balance of discipline, joy, and discovery.
Intro to Kathak for Kids and Adults
Duration: 8-week series (offered twice a year)
For: Absolute beginners
This series is a crash course in Kathak fundamentals — perfect for anyone new to the form. Students learn basic stance, footwork patterns, spins, hand gestures, and taal patterns & exercises while exploring Kathak’s connection to music.
1st Year Syllabus
For: Dancers with at least 1 year of prior Kathak training
Is the entry point for ongoing training at Oorja. Classes build on the basics through more complex compositions, short sequences, and tukdas and todes. Students also begin exploring expressive elements and performance readiness, developing both clarity and confidence.
2nd Year Syllabus
For: Dancers with 1–2 years of consistent Kathak training
This level deepens technique and musical understanding through advanced footwork, extended compositions, and abhinaya. Regular training includes both nritta (pure dance) and nritya (expressive dance) practice.
3rd Year Syllabus
For: Experienced Kathak dancers with 2 or more years of formal training
Focuses on mastery, performance, and choreographic development. Dancers work on complex rhythmic cycles, improvisation, storytelling, and repertoire pieces while strengthening stamina and artistry.
4th Year Syllabus
For: Experienced Kathak dancers with 3 or more years of formal training
Focuses on mastery, performance, and choreographic development. Dancers work on complex rhythmic cycles, improvisation, storytelling, and repertoire pieces while strengthening stamina and artistry.
